Coming north through Duluth and follow to Grand Marais |
A bucket list for many years is to take the ferry over to Isle Royale National Park which sits out in Lake Superior, where no vehicles are allowed, you have to get around by your 2 feet! Some cottages, lodges and inn or 2, a general store, the National Park Service's Information Center, and the wild and pure air of the north is all that is on the island. We will only spend the day there, taking the ferry (2 hour boat ride) over, walk around as much as we can see, then board the boat at 3pm. It is a scenic boat tour also, giving you history of the area, traveling around the island as it goes to 3 other stops, rounds back and heads back to Grand Portage. You are allowed to tent camp on the island, have to get a permit, but that is not what we want. Just to go to the island and see it.
We also know we probably won't have any cell service while 'up north'. Hence, this blog will have to be it until we come back down, through Duluth, and then head along the south shore of Lake Superior heading into Wisconsin. We do not know how long we will be in Grand Marias, at least a week - want to go to the Boundary Waters at the border of Canada, hike along the Gunflint Trail above Grand Portage, just experience that part of the world. Stay turned.
