Drive to Cornucopia, Wisconsin

Why should yesterday be any different? Started out with no rain when we hooked up the RV and car together around 8:15am, and got on the road by 8:30, but 10 miles down the road heading towards Duluth, rain.  Light, then little heavier, then downpour.  Yuck.  Hate for Dave to drive in the rain - makes his nerves a bit frayed.
Lake Superior from our windshield, heading south on Rte 61
This RV is called an ice house.  Saw a number of them.
Had great parting photos of Lake Superior
Purple lupines abounded

Passed Cliffs (originally was Cleveland Cliffs)
Cliffs Taconite plant

As you can see - rain, a lot of it by the time we got to this tunnel
What the heck, just means we have to be more diligent.  Amazing with the drive down, the lupines lining the road on both sides were spectacular.  So many shades of purple.  And some pink.  Almost looks like someone planted them, you get a huge bunch together, then rows of them.  Pretty.
Duluth about 10 miles away

Heavy rain but no wind this time

Got within 10 miles of Duluth where you could see the downtown area and the bridge and of course, raining really hard.  But at least no wind like he had on our drive over and north 2 weeks ago.  Up and over we drove, heading into Wisconsin and picking up Route 2 (same route that runs through Cleveland and on to New York), followed it a bit then picked up Route 13 heading north to the small town of Cornucopia, Wisconsin.  Why here?  Wanted to take advantage of seeing the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and islands.  We have driven by it, never stopped.
Bottom right of black square is town of Cornucopia
We are at a marina, camping right on Lake Superior's water's edge.  When I first called about this place, said we had full hookups, which we don't.  So we are frugal on our water management while here.  And, Cornucopia is touted as the most northern town in Wisconsin.  About 5 miles eastward is the start of the Apostle Island National Park so closeness is the key.

Pretty lonely road once we passed out of Superior, Wisconsin
What a treat we have had here at the marina.  Rained all evening and into the night, sometimes quite hard, but around 8:45pm the rain stopped long enough for a pretty sunset.  That's the other claim to fame - great sunsets.  The rain started again about 10:00, but what a treat.  And we see freighters in the distance heading to or from Duluth.  Being here on the water reminds us of our many years as sailboaters, loved the time doing it and by being here, brings back so many memories.
Our view out of the windows of the RV - notice the sailboat coming?
Oh, we remember those days on a rough Lake Erie
Then a big sigh as you enter the harbor, home!
We can see freighters coming and going
Heard kids - looked out the back window - swimming in 50 degree water!  Brr
This morning we drove into the city of Ashland to get to a drug store to refill prescriptions and on the way back stopped in the town of Bayfield.  We will take a tour boat ride tomorrow to see many of the islands and also to see sea caves, lighthouses, wrecks, tons of stuff - so they say.  And - hope - weather forecast for tomorrow is sunny and 71!  Woot, woot!
Rain stopped, sunset commenced
Sun behind squall line - Spilt Rock Lighthouse getting brunt of squall

This morning a sailor went out, how peaceful is lake now!
View from my chair in RV
Ashland has many murals in town
This one depicts all you can experience in the area
