We are within 5 miles from Farewell Bend, the last place the Oregon Trail Emigrants camped at before they left the Snake River to head over the Blue Mountains and reach the Columbia River and continue on westward to Oregon City near the present day of Portland, Oregon.
Farewell Bend is now a state park with camping, boating, fishing and picnicking, the camp sights are on the bluff overlooking the river. We know that the Snake River is quite low because we are also camping right at the river's edge and the boat ramp is up on dry land. However, the river is still quite swift but we are not sure how deep it is. Just a tidge down the river towards Farewell Bend you can see rapids and the bottom. Obviously boating is not done right now, the owner of the campground said that in the spring - different story.

Water way low |

The Snake moves north from here - up into Hells Canyon |
So, we walked around the state park, took some pictures, talked with the camp host a bit, and headed home. The Snake River turns northward at this bend, heading up into Hells Canyon.

Pretty asters - all over the grounds of the state park |
|
We are camping right near Rapids #2 |
|
Snake River right in back of us |
|
It's really low - the boat ramps are out of the water |
