Bighorn Canyon National Recreational Area

Yesterday we did a road trip - really big road trip - with the car.  Our main interest to go see was the Medicine Wheel National Historical Site on top of the Bighorn Mountains - east of Cody about 100 miles away.  Weather report was a go so off we went.

Traveled through Cody and on towards Lovell which is a town located at the base of the Bighorn Canyon NRA.  Stopped at the visitor's center and got maps to visit the park.  Was amazed at how big the area was  - 71 mile long Bighorn Lake created by the Yellowtail Dam near Fort Smith, Montana - hopefully see some of the wild mustang horses that roam freely through the area and also bighorn sheep.  The Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range mustangs are 120 to 140 in count, all colors and markings, with their origins from the Spanish a couple of hundred years ago.

A tidge of Bighorn Lake - supposedly where the mustangs are

Our first stop was a viewing area of the lake where the wild mustangs typically can be seen, if you are lucky.  We did not see them at this spot but about 1/4 mile down the road on the left.  Luck.  Onwards we drove to  Devil Canyon Overlook which provides you with a breathtaking 1000 foot drop off to view the Bighorn River as it winds through the Canyon.

We learned the baby is called Patriot
Beautiful view

Continued on the road north and there was a car in front of us stopped - the passenger was pointing out her window at something.  As we stopped to look - bighorn sheep right by the roadway.  Snapped a couple of photos and while there I kept hearing stones falling down into the ravine in front of us - looked across and down - a bunch of them feeding below, some with babies.  Cute.

See her baby to left behind her?
Heard stones dropping below - and whad' ya' know?
Drove to the end of the paved roadway to Barry's Landing which is a marina and campground.  Took some photos and then headed back.  Saw another group of wild mustangs in a different area, and the same ones still eating at the place we saw earlier.  After coming back to the beginning of the area we headed again east towards the Bighorn Mountains.
