Faywood Hot Springs, NM and Gila National Forest

We escaped after 7 months of winter (Tucson style) and chose to go back to an area of New Mexico we spent at years ago.  We had camped in Deming, NM a number of times, and also Silver City.  Faywood is located 25 miles north of Deming and 25 miles south of Silver City.  Only thing in Faywood is hot springs.  It has lured many people over millennium, from prehistoric people to Spanish explorers, to westward travelers and soldiers protecting them, health-seekers, minors (silver and gold), even a professional baseball team and countless people from all over the world.  Faywood has cabins for rent, RV spaces with electric and water hookup and tent sites.  Clothing is optional in some areas.  You are guaranteed your own bath time in one of the 5 pools.  We did not come there for that, just wanted a place to rest after visiting different areas.

The first day of being there we drove north towards the Gila National Forest and stopped at Lake Roberts for a quick hike along the shore.  Very peaceful.  Then continued north and stopped at the vista lookout near Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument.  We traveled on the Trail of the Mountain Spirits National Scenic Byway.  We had spent a bit of time in the past at the National Monument, just wanted to be out in the wild and enjoy.  Did see planned burning by the Gila Forest Service and saw the scorched ground.

Our lunch stop was at the overlook called Copperas Vista suggested by forest ranger.  And we got treated to a group of high school kids plus a couple of college students and their advisors working on an intricate mosaic at the overlook.  Very impressive.

Reminded us of Slumgullion Pass in Lake City
