Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge

From the damming of the Missouri River at Fort Peck, the lake that filled behind the dam created a large area extremely picturesque, an outdoor enthusiast's playground.  Boating, fishing, swimming, horse back riding, bird watching, hiking (although there are few trails and are remote to get to), this area is quite breathtaking.
To get to any of the recreation areas, had to travel FAR - on a dirt road
In the middle of nowhere
Oh my

12 more miles to go

I see the Lake

Fields of Golden Banner

We decided to go to the area called The Pines which was said to be quite pretty. Driving down a dirt road just south of Glasgow along 26 miles just to get to the cutoff to get to Fort Peck Lake, we passed many cattle herds grazing away.  Some had to be coaxed along to get them to move off the road, it was open grazing area.  Pretty much flat land, some rolling hills, could see for miles in any direction. We were driving parallel to the lake, heading south.
Wrought iron signage - loved this!

About 2 feet long, non-poisonous, but still.  Had fish in it's mouth

And gone
Once we turned off the main dirt road onto the "pines" road, the landscaped changed to more rolling hills and eventually Ponderosa Pine trees and scrub.  We were stunned to see the Lake spread out before us.  Found "The Pines" area which is 3 small communities with summer homes (some were amazing!!!) all facing the Lake.  Could not imagine being in this area in the winter, although they don't get much snow but the wind and temperatures are sometimes down to 40 below.  Brrr.

Very crafty person who made these signs

Abandoned ranch

Stories this could tell
Stopped in one community, walked down to the boat ramp.  I stepped onto the ramp and a prairie garter snake slithered out from under the ramp with a fish in it's mouth that it just caught.  A little scary, but it swallowed the fish and then moved back under the dock.  Gawked at the homes, drove on to the next little spot, looked around, no hiking trails at all.  Stopped at campground and walked around - all primitive camp sites (no electric/water/sewer) - and there were some campers enjoying being there.  Not my kind of camping, but looked peaceful, restful.
On our way back, different cows, still not moving off road
Came back by Fort Peck Dam and walked the nature trail within the campground that is near the dam.  Pretty little walk, saw a deer staring at us.

Look closely, see the head of deer in bushes to right?
A different view of the dam from the campground
On our way back into our campground, neighbor RVer had packed up his toys, looks like he's moving out in the morning.  Lots of toys!
