Three Rivers Petroglyph Site

We traveled down out of the mountains westward to a small dot on the map called Three Rivers which is a BLM managed archeology site called Three Rivers Petroglyph Site.  Sometime between 400 AD and 1450 AD the area was a thriving community of Indigenous People.  No one knows why they left suddenly, drought? wars? disease? But the people left over 20,000 petroglyphs which are etched stone markings.  Like scrapings or chiseled, quite impressive.

Trail guide to tell us certain things when we saw the markers

Yep, we will watch for those snakes
Nice trail

The ranger gave us a trail map and said to be careful, rattle snakes are out. Started up the trail and were blown away in the first 5 minutes - did not matter where you looked - petroglyphs every where. These pictures are just a tiny sampling of what we saw.  Amazing.

Where there are lizards - no snakes.  Thank goodness.
We are camping somewhere up in those far mountains

College students spent six summers documenting the site and I am sure we only saw one tiny bit - you just could not see them no matter where you looked.  Pretty impressive.  And no, we did not see any rattlers although 2 couples ahead of us warned us they did.
Looking west, we could see White Sands National Monument near Alamogordo
