Around Kanab and Visit to Best Friends

Typically on the day before we move we start it out with cleaning/laundry/putting stuff away.  Not today.  We walked around town yesterday and stopped at the Best Friends Store, a satellite store set up to inform people about the largest no-kill animal shelter in the country.  Located in Kanab just 'up' the road, we signed up for a tour for this morning to see the shelter up close.  We had been a supporter for many years, way back when we were living in Vermilion, Ohio, our neighbor had volunteered during the summer at the shelter and we since had supported the shelter in various ways.
Kanab sits on the Vermilion Cliffs.  Beautiful

Storm just missed us, thank goodness

Lovely landscaped koi pond at the Welcome Center
Started 34 years ago when a group of friends decided that they needed to stop the killing of animals that were left in shelters, came together and purchased land in the town, in an area called Angel Canyon, and began saving lives one animal at a time.  Financed strictly by donations and corporate sponsorships. Today Best Friends not only house dogs and cats but bunnies, horses, birds, pigs, and is a rehab center for wild animals.  Quite an impressive place.  Here's the link to the organization.   www.bestfriends.org    Check it out.

2016 dog adoptions, so far
Met these 2 little doggies, have been in the shelter 4 weeks, progressing
some day to be adopted.  Were abused prior and are very shy.

One of the many cat houses on premises.
See the black and white at the lower left?
This guy is an 'office' cat - he's a loner so he gets to roam where others aren't
Have to say - would be very hard pressed to work there, I would bring home every cat that came in.  One fella was living at the Colonel's Barrack cat house looked like Buddy.  And another looked like our friends' cat, Smokey.  Our tour guide who started working there 4 months ago has brought home 2 dogs and cat since starting.  Wonder how many she will have at the end of a year??
Cemetery for their angels
Angel Canyon, many movies and TV shows filmed here
Kanab is a great base for those wanting to visit the national parks in the area.  North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Cedar Breaks, Vermilion Cliffs, Glen Canyon, Pipe Spring, Grand Staircase Escalante are the big draws but there is so much more.  Slot canyons, pink coral sand dunes, many hiking trails are here for the taking.  Great place to visit.

You can visit some of the studios Hollywood used
And Kanab started a big tourist draw in 2010 with the slogan..."Greatest Earth on Show" and also "AbraKanabra".  Known as Little Hollywood, so many westerns were filmed here.  TV shows such as Lassie, Gunsmoke, Daniel Boone, F Troop, and Six Million Dollar Man are just a few.

I remember him, and the shows
Placards all over town, over 150 of them
We leave here tomorrow and drive into Las Vegas (not looking forward to that due to the traffic) and through then south to a small town in Arizona called Chloride.  It is 8 miles north of Kingman.  Slowly getting back, soon.
