We made the move yesterday from Dalhart, TX to Eagle Nest, New Mexico which is located 35 miles northeast of Taos, New Mexico. The morning 'to do' list to get the RV ready went very smoothly. Actually, we had been awake for at least an hour before daylight due to all the worker-bees leaving. Diesel truck after diesel truck leaving. Our 'boys' next door did not, the boss man (very young) went out with another man who came by, we believe they went to survey the fields before committing to getting all the equipment ready. But, the evening before we watched one of the 'boys' get his pet tarantula out and played with it. Kinda funny to watch grown men be that skittish. I wanted to go over there and see the spider up close but was caught making dinner. And watched the boys gather up bugs for the spider to eat. Wonder how long it will live in the lunch box that is stored under their rig.

Hello New Mexico |
We traveled on state routes and crossed into New Mexico and followed the Cimarron Route of the Santa Fe Trail. Little to nothing to see, this route was harder on the emigrants, very little water but was much quicker than the Mountain Route. We got bummed out about an hour into our drive - a truck pulling a cart with an ATV on it passed us and as he passed us, threw a stone. Zing. Got a nice chip in the windshield. Scared the bejabers out of us with the hit. Will see if we get cracked and then have the window replaced, again.
Crossed over Interstate 25 and headed west bound and into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains which were looming up ahead. A gradual climb up into the mountains, did not realize how high we were getting. And beautiful drive! We want to come back and explore the area this week. Came out of Cimarron Canyon and right in front of us was Eagle Nest Lake. Beautiful! Swung around the lake and came to our campground, Golden Eagle RV Park. Very few people here. Nights get down to freezing but during the day in the low 70's. And very very quiet. This morning took pictures of mist rising out of the lake and then engulfed us for about an hour. Lifted by 9am. Felt like we were in the Pacific Northwest with the fog. Lots to see here, but we need to take it slow for a couple of days - we are camping at our highest elevation ever - 8,258 feet. And we feel it.

Our ultimate destination - somewhere on the other side of the mountain |
|
Followed the Santa Fe Trail for quite awhile |
|
Cimarron Canyon - just beautiful |
|
Cimarron Creek flowed beside the roadway |
Buddy did just fine - why did he not get sick this time? Amazing! We cannot figure out what the secret is. He got his Dramamine in the morning like always, but no sickness. Whereas Gracie - she is feeling the elevation - she is very lethargic.

The mist this morning - awesome! |
