Bachelor Loop, Last Chance Mine, Hansen Mill

One of the 'things' to do in Creede is to do the Bachelor Loop tour.  It's a 17 mile self driving tour which begins in town and ends in town, taking you up 2000 feet above Creede.  We could not go farther than the Last Chance Mine, the road got very rough and 4wheel vehicles/atvs/dirt bikes could transverse the rest of the loop.  Along the way are many relics of old mines, the 1890's was a huge boom for silver in Creede. One stop is the old Bachelor Town City where 1500 people lived.  Other stops showed abandoned mines.  At Last Chance Mine, now privately owned, you could prospect for whatever you can get.  For a fee, of course.  No, we did not do that but did buy different rocks for the back yard.  A large Amethyst was on display that was taken out just prior to the mine closing for production.

The man who owns it, Jack Morris, brought out and put into his museum everything he found.  Lanterns, clothing, mining equipment, tools, meal boxes, furniture, tobacco tins, you name it - it's on display.  He is so proud of his museum.  It's free to roam around in, and if you want, he has 2 cabins for rent that has their own look over the mine tailings and gulch.

We stopped at the beginning of the loop and had a lunch overlooking Creede from above.  RVs set up camping (open free dispersed camping allowed), then did the loop.

Another scenic drive to Hanson Mill took us up to 10,870 feet.  Again, pretty, but we could not go to the mill or on to the Wheeler Geological area since the road had been washed out.  Pretty barren land.

We have finally come up with a name for the car.  We have named past cars (or Granddaughters have for us) such as Big Red, Black Beauty, Janis (the Jeep).  So, this car now is called Goat.  As in Billy Goat, we are going Goat'n, MT Goat, wild goat.  When we were trekking along the Bachelor Loop and the Goat became MT Goat (for mountain).  Another day we were just out driving and called our trek- Goat'n.  It gets so dirty!

Yuck.  Had to go into South Fork just to get most of the dirt off.  And looking out the window right now, it's caked again.  The dirty old goat.
