The drive from Ahmeek to Copper Harbor was very short, not our shortest (from Cascade Locks to White Salmon, Washington - 24 miles) but short and a little hairy for Dave. We decided not to pull the car, we would drive separately, and I would lead the way. Route 41 is quite narrow and twisty the last 15 miles or so. Dave said a number of times he had to be on the middle line, the tires were just barely on the pavement on the outside. And very foresty here and he said he could hear branches rubbing on the top of the rig as he moved. Checked the internet on our latitude - we were 30 miles more north when we were in Grand Marais. Huh.

View from one of the lookouts - not at the top yet, looking down on town |

Kite sailing - are we at Hood River again? |

7 years ago this was a cute store on top, now - just the fireplace left |
But, we made it here, and when we checked in, the folks in our sight had just left and they were mowing the grass. Only had to wait about 15 minutes. Was good to get out of the woods and the mosquitos - they were very numerous and had gotten in the rig. Pache and Buddy had a good time tracking those flying buggers and having snacks.

Lake Medora (near Eagle Harbor) |

Very clear day, where is Canada, eh? |
Wood lily - I think my new favorite color! |
Wonder what the story is |
A moose! No, just a bobble head toy in dash. Shoot. |
Lots of ATVs, UTVs, motorcycles, sports cars, bicycles - crowded on top |
We will be here until this coming Saturday, just enjoying being in this part of the world. Seven years ago we had only 3 days and could not do everything we wanted. And the sun is out! Woot! This past Friday we drove to the Jam Pot, a Franciscan monastery that has a bakery that sells to the public. Picked up a few items, then did a quick drive around Eagle Harbor which is about 14 miles back down Route 41. Too rainy and foggy to take pictures.

So many pretty wildflowers |
The hike went up and over the ridge, through heavy woods |
Got to the 'look out' then trekked on |
We were surprised when we came out of the woods, there's the car |
Yesterday we ventured out, driving to Brockway Mountain which sits above the peninsula with commanding views of the Upper and Lake Superior. What a clear day! Did a quick little hike and saw so many wood lilies blooming, I think my new favorite color is orange. First time on this summer's trip that we have caught wildflowers blooming. So pretty.
Many of you know that we rarely go out to eat while we are 'summering', we prefer to eat our meals 'at home'. But, there is a 5-star restaurant within walking distance of the campground called the Harbour Haus and we had reservations for dinner yesterday. Highly recommended by camp ground manager. Got a table right at the window overlooking Copper Harbor. Magnificent! And when in Rome you do as the Romans do - we of course had to have the fresh caught white fish that Lake Superior is known for. Delicious.

Look closely - in far distance to right is a freighter going to Duluth View out our window/table at restaurant |
5 miles out |
Going to take on goods, that baby is empty |
Isle Royale Queen IV coming in for night |
While eating we could watch the comings and goings on the water - private boats coming in, small fishing vessel, and way out - 5 miles out - freighters coming and going. It was so clear that it looked so much closer than 5 miles. And then the climax - the Isle Royale Queen IV came in to dock - returning from Isle Royale. The waitresses go out when the ferry comes in and wave and dance for the people on board. And the boat blows it's horn in appreciation. Pretty cool.

Waitresses lined up waving to people on boat |
And then they started to dance for the people |
This freighter was loaded |
Kayaks and canoes being off-loaded, passengers used them to move around while on Isle Royale (no motorized anything allowed on island). |
