We are so excited - after traveling 1500 RV miles (4000 truck miles) we have finally stopped 8 miles west of Glacier National Park in a small town called Hungry Horse, Montana. Got in yesterday afternoon, traveling almost due north from North Fork, Idaho. Wasn't a long trip (250 miles) but seemed forever because we weaved in and out of small towns, then traveling along side Flathead Lake - and that lake is huge! The name of Hungry Horse came about when 2 draft horses wandered off from the logging camp in 1900 and after 3 months were found, hungry, starving, ragged but alive. Nursed back, they became a legend and when the town was incorporated, Hungry Horse became the name. Cutsy town, lots and lots of travelers pass through here. We have to get some huckleberry jam or preserves or something - that's what this town is known for. We again are camped near a major river, the Flathead River, which flows in and around the mountains. Had a great thunderstorm last night - lots of rain! Makes everything fresh this morning. And it's cold here - last night got down to 45, today's high is 68. That's fine - I hate the heat and would rather put on a sweatshirt or jacket and it's better hiking weather.
Today we will drive into Glacier National Park to the visitor's center to get information to plan our stay here. They call the mountains here the Alps of America. This stay is our ultimate goal this summer - want to go drive the "going to the sun" highway", I read and saw pictures of this many years ago and have always wanted to see this. Yeah! we made it! Here is a canned picture of Glacier that I found - hope we can find it when we go there.
